May 27 | finally.
Went out for a little walk with these early this morning:

Came back with these gems:

Didn't get my size or color but I am sure some will
trade me these Supreme Dunks Black US10 for a Supreme White US9. Anyone. Will
try again for Whites tomorrow. Will settle for Black US9s though.

May 26 | GQ · Fred Woodward · Futura
X CK
It took me a two-three issues of Rolling Stone
before I realized something was different about Rolling Stone. Looked at
employee's page and found that Fred Woodward was not longer among the Art
Director. I had another year left on my subscription so I kept reading.
What a difference! It didn't suck but it wasn't exciting either. // A
few months later while working at my friend Pablo Medina's studio, Cubanica,
he tells me Fred Woodward purchased 25 cpu license to Marquee. So it turns
out Mr. Woodward joined the GQ staff. Didn't
spot the font in GQ yet but I am sure it'll be there. Mark Seliger is also
among the staff. So I now have a 3 year subscription to GQ and Rolling
Stone keeps sending me new issues but my subscription expired about two
months ago. // With
each issue I notice an improvement to the design of the magazine. It's
one of the few magazines I look forward to every month. // In
this month's [June 2003] "It's Good To Be A Man" section there's
a picture of the Calvin Kline Artist series bottles. I am pretty sure the
one below
is the Futura bottle. I
could be wrong. Pretty sure the ball was at Vacant while it was in NYC.
// Now someone
tell me where Gail Anderson went??

It was fun. A little more than 3 hours long.
I took some funny pictures while waiting to be seated and then some after
being seated. This was Wednesday May 21, 2003 at MSG in NYC.
The
rest of them.
20 | The Animatrix
Well, most of us should have seen the Matrix Reload by now. Can't wait
for more? Catch the Animatrix. While watching the 4 episodes available
for download, I thought I knew the styles of the animation. Turns out
these
Gods were involved: Yoshiaki
Kawajiri (writer/director of Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D); Shinchiro
Watanabe (writer/director of Cowboy Bebop); Koji Morimoto (animation
supervisor
of Akira); Mahiro Maeda (director of Blue Submarine No. 6); Takeshi Koike
(lead animator on several of director Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s
films, including Wicked City); Peter Chung (creator and director of Flux); Andy
Jones (animation director for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within). Talk
about WOW.

Educated Community (EC) #10 ·
Read about this magazine a little while ago but didn't have a chance to
check it out. While walking around the Lower East Side looking for more
information on the Stash AF1’s, walked into the 360 Toy Group
had and picked up a FREE copy of Educated Community there. This issue has
some kick ass content including interviews with Futura, James Jabbia director
of Supreme and Stussy NYC, DJ Krush + others.

DUB # 12 · Presumably
one would expect to see an article about The Bathing Ape in Educated
Community, WYWS or MetroPop. Completely
surprised to see Nigo founder of The Bathing Ape appear in DUB magazine.
DUB is automotive lifestyles magazine featuring mostly the celebrities
who talk about their rides and 20-24" rims. Reading into the article
one sees why Nigo is featured. He’s got more and fresher rides
than most NBA stars. I went [and sent a number of my friends] searching
for
the
Nigo cover
but after look at more than 20 magazine shops, we were only able find
the Kobe Bryant cover. Did you see the Nigo cover? Let
me know.

New York Times Magazine 05·18·03 · Looks
like A Bathing Ape is getting quite a bit of coverage this month. The
Stores article is not about Nigo, A Bathing
Ape or one of the assorted
names associated with Nigo; Masamichi Katayama is the feature of the
article. Who? you ask. Pretty much all of the Bathing Ape shops, boutiques
and complex are designed by Katayama.

17 | PS1 · Long island City · graffiti
PS1 is
probably my second favorite museum, second to the Cooper-Hewitt,
National Design
Museum. I have seen some of
the most
contemporary works of art at PS1. There’s always an exciting exhibition
going on. There’s Warm Up during
the summer with special music and special exhibitions. Recently Chris Cunningham’s
work was featured (though
I missed it). At this very moment there are a few exhibitions going on,
including: First Steps: Emerging Artists
from Japan, Breaking Away: 2002-2003
National and International Studio Program Exhibition,
but most exciting is Chen Zhen: A Tribute. There
are a few others as well. One of the Chen Zhen pieces takes up an entire
gallery space: Jue Chang - Fifty Strokes
to Each. This interactive piece has drums made from found chairs from around
the world. I was luckily enough to have been there
while two drummers were there enjoying the exhibition and making some incredible
music. This is a must see exhibition for those interested in contemporary
[chinese] art.

Graffiti · After
walking out of PS1, there was a sign announcing the Crane Street Open studios
day, just across the street from PS1. As I walked down Crane Street, I
notice all this incredible artwork on the walls. I am no expert on graffiti
art but I found this incredible.

Idea 297 · A
little old but still good. Kick ass Special Feature on Kate Gibb, 56 pages!
Feature on H2O/Michael
Leon with interview. What's great about Idea is that it's in Japanese but
they've translated most of the stories and interviews (though they might
consider a new translator) The only bad part is the price, because it's
shipped by air mail to Kinokuniya here in NYC the price per issue is $43
($293 for a one year subscription by airmail or $234 by surface mail).
It's about
the size of Communication's Arts/Print magazine but it's a hell
of a lot cooler than CA or Print.

Tokion—The South Issue ·
A lot cheaper than Idea. Also a little old. (I have been in the
middle of the Communication Design Senior Exhibition and finals
for the past 3 months; just starting to catch up with life.) Nice
watercolor typography, some really nice layouts and a pretty quirky
feature on the South. Seems like everybody is into the south these
days. Could it have been the trucker hat craze? We also saw
“The Southern Issue” in While You Were Sleeping (WYWS). Also
great about Tokion is that they've started to translate most content
into japanese. Let's hope Relax will translate into english
sometime.
